Talk about a fish story

We had a funny thing happen last week. A man who said his name was Michael Moore, drove up to the Daily Journal and ask to see someone who could take a photo of this great fish he just caught in the Russian River. Our photographer, MacLeod Pappidas, and our sports editor Anthony Dion, were both in the office and talked to the man and went outside to see this fish of his. Sure enough he had a pretty big fish there, one he said was a steelhead and which he caught somewhere near Hopland in a secret fishing spot of his own. MacLeod, who moved here from the wilds of Oregon where fishing is serious business and so are the rules about fishing, noticed immediately that the fish still had this rear fin that is usually amputated in hatchery fish. That meant the fish was likely a wild fish, which he was surprised to see. But being a fairly new resident of California, and not knowing the fishing rules here, he didn't question it. The man assured him that oh yes it was a wild fish. Being the cooperative and community minded folks that they are, MacLeod and Anthony took the photo and printed it in Saturday's edition. Then the phone calls from Fish and Game, and local biologists, started pouring in. Sure enough, Moore's fish is totally illegal and the authorities would sure like to find and talk to Mr. Moore. If Mr. Moore is out there, we'd advise him to come forward and admit he made a mistake. It may cost him a fine, but it would be a good lesson to other fishers about the problems with illegal fishing. We are planning an upcoming story on that very issue, but it would be great to have Mr. Moore participate in it.

Smart Growth to DDR: Definitely not interested

I got a call from Ukiah Smart Growth spokeswoman Judy Pruden last week explaining that she was out of town when I called her and that's why her phone message machine was off. She says when she is in town the machine is always on. Anyway, Sioux, the lady from Fair and Powerful Communications, the firm organizing the upcoming forums on the plans of Development Diversified Realty for a huge mall at the old Masonite property, can forget trying to get Ukiah Smart Growth interested in their plans. According to Judy, Smart Growth Ukiah isn't interested in anything DDR has in mind. According to Judy: "Sioux whining and crying about us not wanting to meet with them and so forth is just a crock. I don't know what her problem is. She is not listening when we tell them we don't want that area rezoned. They are ignoring the community will."
Well, they may be ignoring Ukiah Smart Growth's wishes but I think it's a little premature to say that what Smart Growth Ukiah wants is "the community will."

A reader emailed me last week to see if we were planning to attend all three of DDR's sessions and I said we would certainly be at the first one but I didn't know if we had the reporter resources to be at all three. I assumed they would be three identical sessions timed for day, night and weekend to give a variety of options to people who want to go. She said she thought that DDR would be incorporating public views at each session and the next would show additional changes. I doubt that, but I will find out.

Ukiah on the crossword map

My mom in NYC tells me that in this past Sunday's NY Times crossword, "Ukiah" is the answer to 67 Across, "West Coast wine city." I've heard Ukiah called a lot of things, but "wine city" hasn't yet been one of them.

More on DDR forum

Just a note that I got another email from Sioux at Fair and Powerful Comunication that my characterization of them as DDR's PR firm is incorrect. In her words: " FPC is not 'DDR’s P.R. firm'.   DDR has PR firms - FPC’s role is to create spaces in which differing opinions can be shared in a respectful and productive way."

Why bring children into it?

While I understand why people think it's effective, I wish people protesting or encouraging actions by public bodies would stop bringing small children into council and board chambers to plead cases for the adults around them. At Tuesday's hearing on the proposed batch asphalt plant near Willits, three small children were sent to the podium to "testify" to their opposition to the plant. Please. These three children are no doubt very bright and I am sure they are "concerned," but they have no business addressing the merits one way or another of an asphalt batch plant they could not possibly really understand or care about except for what their elders tell them: that it will pollute the air they breathe and be bad for the environment. A couple of years ago, the local anti smoking folks from the health department and the American Cancer Society looking for, I seem to recall, a cigarette sales ordinance, ushered a group of small children before the board of supervisors to tell them how their mommies or daddies died of cancer or heart disease from smoking. Those children could barely remember their scripts and had to be promtped from behind to say things like "My Daddy died from smoking and I miss him."
Unless the children are on hand to ask for more ice cream trucks at Todd Grove Park or to testify as to why they like or dislike the tacos in the school lunchroom, I think they should be kept out of political board rooms. It only makes the adults look that much more desperate.

What's next for Hopland?

I wrote the following awhile back but somehow it got posted to the Web of Life blog instead of this one. But here it is:

The Hopland Inn restaurant and bar, closed for the month of January, did not reopen in February and I understand that while the hotel is open, the restaurant and bar will remain closed. That, coupled with the closure of the Shotgun Restaurant at the end of 2007 is really a shame. I understand that the Shotgun Restaurant will be available for parties and special events but will not reopen as a nightly venue.
All of this is depressing to Hoplanders who have come to enjoy - apparently not quite often enough - having two high quality restaurants in town.
The Hopland Inn has had recent history of trouble staying open. New owners come and go, engendering lots of hope and good will and soon leaving disappointment and bewilderment behind.
I have to say that the New Year's Eve meal I had at the Hopland Inn (to the tune of $250 for two and we brought our own wine) was, to be kind, a bit ambitious for their young chef. I won't go into the details, but if that's the kind of food they were producing in the past six months then I'm not surprised business dropped off. But they tried hard and had a fabulous venue to work with and tried to feature local wines and organic food. (Although organic for me is not as important as tasty and fresh no matter how simple.)
Lawson's Station I thought always had very good food, but it lacked ambiance. The restaurant needed a makeover by a good designer. The service there was great though. And they also had a good local wine selection.
I was walking my dog back behind Lawson's Station and the Hopland Inn the other day and realized that both hotels would have been perfect for a revitalized train system along Highway 101. There's a train station (now the fire station) and two beautiful hotels with great back door presence just waiting for passengers to disembark.
Why are places like the Hopland Inn and Lawson's Station so hard to keep open?
Now, Hopland is looking a bit downtrodden again. Bright spots include the new Sip! Mendocino wine tasting room, which, with the other tasting rooms in town and the new Cheesecake Mama cafe are keeping things going (the Bluebird as ever is the best breakfast on the north coast).
What will spring bring?

Thompson still a Hillary superdelegate?

I read recently that among California's superdelegates to the Democratic convention was Rep. Mike Thompson who represents Mendocino County and the rest of the 1st Congressional District of the North Coast. He was said to be committed to voting for Hillary Clinton. Now, since his district favors Barak Obama, is he still going to vote for Hillary? A lot of these congressional superdelgates made their minds up long ago and I am wondering, if a superdelegate like Thompson sees that his own district favors the other candidate, can he change his allegiance if the Democratic convention goes down to the wire, which from all indications now, it will.
Anybody know?
Can someone from Thompson's office help me with this?

Jumped to wrong conclusion says DDR

I heard today from both Jason Brenner at Ruff &Associates and Sioux Benson Messinger from Fair & Powerful Communications about my mention in the Commerce File this week of DDR’s March forums where they plan to reveal their project for the former Masonite site. (Ruff & Assoc. is one of the project’s architects and Fair & Poerful is DDR’s pr firm).
In my Commerce File item I noted that the sessions require pre-registration and a registration confirmation and concluded (as did the half dozen or so other people who called me to point it out) that it meant DDR was trying to screen the attendees with an eye to keeping the forums from turning into Smarth Growth protest sessions.
Not so, say both Jason and Sioux. They say the registration is necessary because they can only handle 30 people at a time in the sessions - that’s the number Jason believes is the maximum if they’re to have good give and take and, that it is strictly on a first-come first-served, basis.
Sioux says if the first 30 people who sign up are all from Smart Growth Ukiah, that’s fine with her.
In fact, she says she offered to hold a special session just for Smart Growth Ukiah and that her last email was returned with the message “Stop emailing us.”
I can’t see why Smart Growth wouldn’t welcome a special meeting with DDR’s project architects to see what the project looks like and what DDR is likely to bring to the county. That just sounds like, “Whatever it is, we don’t want it.”
I called Judy Pruden, who has been named the spokeperson for Smart Growth, but she doesn’t have an answering machine on her home phone so I was unable to get hold of her to get the Smart Growth reasoning here.

City has somewhat different response to salary request

Just as a contrast, I have not had a single call from a city employee about our request for salaries. I have had a couple of calls from the city financial officer Gordon Elton giving me the status of their effort, one problem they were having (wondering if the name of an employee who is under age 18 is releasable - good question) and letting me know how and when I will receive the information. And, Elton also offered to sit down with me and the city’s Interim City Manager to look through the numbers and explain what they mean and answer any questions about them that I may have. Something I plan to do Wednesday.
A somewhat different experience from the county’s response.

DDR polling?

I got the following email from a local resident:

"A Laytonville resident received a call Tuesday evening from a professional polling operation in Florida identified as "CVC Group."  It was apparent from the questions that the poll was being conducted for DDR.
The resident was asked if she would participate in a survey related to the Masonite property development.
"The main thrust of the questions was to find out what she considered to be the most important issue in Mendocino County right now.  A list of subjects was suggested, including schools, taxes, housing, and the need for more retail.
"The pollster asked again and again in different ways to probe what issues the resident thought were important, as though a list of political "hot buttons" was being assembled.
"There were a lot of questions about sales taxes revenue and the need to keep it local.
"She was asked what stores she would like to see at the Masonite site.
"She was asked if she knew what mixed use was and how she felt about putting it at Masonite.
"Other questions included party registration, where she put herself on a scale of liberal to conservative, education level, and how long she had lived in Mendocino County.
" There was one question about what she thought about housing development at Lover's Lane.
" Based on the resident's recollection of the poll, it didn't seem to be a "push poll" that tries to implant a viewpoint, as much as a real opinion poll that can be used to design a political campaign in favor of DDR....something like "approve DDR so we can fund schools and fix the roads."
"Folks should keep their ears open for other accounts of this poll, because it may be useful to spread awareness about it."

Has anyone else gotten a similar call?

Wish you had a poll Tuesday? Me too

Another good example of why mail-in voting is so bad. I have heard from a number of people that they might have voted differently if they have waited to vote until after the South Carolina primaries. Thinking Hillary Clinton a forgone conclusion, they voted for her, and now having seen her - and mostly Bill's - performance in South Carolina have switched their allegiance to Obama. They say they always liked Obama but weren't sure he had a chance.
Today polls are showing Obama's pull in California within 2 points of Clinton's - where it was once a 25-point difference. There may be lots of Mendocino County residents who wish they could vote for Obama now but have already mailed in their ballots. Or what about the people who voted for John Edwards whohas now dropped out of the race.
Our county clerk will say, well, people should just wait to vote. No, people should go to the polls on election day when they have all the information they need in order to make their decision.

Ghost hunting in Covelo

Here's an email I got recently which I found interesting and want to share. It's from a fellow named Paul Dale Roberts and he discusses the supernatural in Covelo. I have shortened the names of the paranormal investigators he gives since I don't know who they are or to what extent they participated.

HPI Chronicles: Covelo - A Dimensional Rift for Ghosts, UFOs, Shadow People, Little People and Bigfoot.
By Paul Dale Roberts, HPI Ghostwriter

Today is December 15, 2007, Saturday. I am meeting a group of paranormal investigators/ufologists/cryptozoologists/scouts/occult pioneers at Starbucks on 15th and Broadway in Sacramento and more investigators at Paradise Juice and Coffee Bar in Willits. I am the lead investigator and scoutmaster of this scouting mission to Covelo. H. and N. are our guides, since they have lived in Covelo for quite sometime and know the ins and outs of this town.
H. and N. are the first ones that told me about haunted Covelo and M., a reesearcher came up with this information, these are her words from an email:
"I did some research on the Round Valley Wars, Mendocino County investigation. I believe that this place could definitely be haunted. It has a very bloody history.
http://rwor.org/a/v19/910-19/917/rndvaly.htm
http://www.militarymuseum.org/Massacres.html
http://www.covelo.net/
Then I received this email from H.:
"The small, lonely but luscious town of Covelo is situated in Northeastern Mendocino County and is one of the most beautiful places in California. It is also one of the most heavily imprinted and is considered haunted due to its very sad, tragic history. Also known as the Nome Cult Farm, Round Valley Indian Reservation and Camp Wright, the valley and its surrounding mountains, lakes, rivers and streams were traditional homelands of the Yuki, Wailaki, Huchnom, Lassik, and other Indian tribes dating back to the late B.C. period. It was in the early to mid 1800's, Anglo-American settlers and the United States Government came marching in. The results were some of the most horrific in the State of California's history.
Link to history can be found here: http://www.covelo.net/tribes/pages/tribes_history.shtml
Forced relocation of California's Indians/Nome Cult Walk (were marched here!): http://www.covelo.net/tribes/pages/nomecult/tribes_nome_cult_history.shtml"
"I first came to the valley in 1997 to visit my parents after they relocated to Covelo from Sacramento. My dad took a job as a school teacher at the local charter school. I cannot describe to you the utter pain and sorrow I felt from the land upon arrival, despite its optic brilliance. Being so empathic I found it virtually impossible to tread lightly, as there was so much heaviness everywhere. I owe much of my spiritual enlightenment to the truth of this land and would like to invite you to come adventure with me. Come scout it out! Bigfoot lives here and is referred to as the Wild Man of the Woods. I have seen this species myself and have a report on file with the BFRO, along with many others (google Covelo and Bigfoot). There are also what the elders refer to as Little People who roam the hills and hollows at night. Then there is also Shadow people. There are UFO sightings galore! There's not a single inch of this valley that's not anciently occupied with spirits leading the way. I have lost time on Hwy 162 with a witness in my car, slipped into another dimension where everything was surreal and buzzing (Paul: This sounds like H. is referring to the Oz Factor, which abductees feel the same thing H. is feeling). No, I wasn't stoned! I channeled a Navaho spirit, followed another to a remote location where I captured an apparition with my camera, and on it goes..
There's all kinds of paranormal phenomena in these Northern California wilds.. Cool thing is, what much of the world calls paranormal is really pretty normal here! After a decade of comings and goingsSˇ I myself have come to the conclusion this land ties into the Vortex of Shasta, expanding on (sharing) Her Majesty's powerful energy grid, heartily seasoned by its own unique energy, of course.
For those who care to venture, you're in for a real treat! Bring lots of equipment and please dress warm.
Pertinent highly recommended reading material (unfortunately out of print but obtainable for a steep price online): Genocide and Vendetta: The Round Valley Wars of Northern California by Lynwood Carranco and Estle Beard. Very good book!"
This is what I know. In 1854 European settlers entered this valley. Legend has it, that when the Yuki Indians saw the first white man, they gathered around his horse, happy to greet this new stranger. The stranger pointed a stick at one of the Indians and the Indian fell dead. The Indians then associated the white man as being a devil. The first governor of California allowed genocide to take place against the Indians and over 5,000 Indians died. When finally a proclamation law came into effect, protecting the Indians, the Indians (men, women and children) became slaves for the white man. So many Indians died, that a creek called Bloody Run Creek actually ran red with Indian blood. The Round Valley Wars was a slaughterhouse of Indians being massacred in these open fields. It is rumored that strong residual haunting activity still takes places on these open killing fields.

As my team of investigators arrived at Paradise Juice and Coffee Bar in Willits to meet our guides H. and N., everyone was overjoyed to see them again. Some of the investigators worked with H. and N. on the Mount Shasta scouting mission. It was a nice reunion! N. made sure I had a green wheat shot, that tasted like grass and would give me an energy boost! H. & N. give a briefing to our HPI Covelo task force and tells us what to expect. We all convoy to Covelo and follow H. up the steep winding roads. On this day we are paranormal pioneer investigators, because this is the first time a paranormal investigating group has officially investigated Covelo. S., known as 'Ms. Macabre' stays in constant communication with C. and I, on the development of this mission. With any new findings, I kept S., our president, fully informed. I did a count on our equipment for this mission. We had 2 walkie talkies, 5 digital cameras, 1 video camera, 4 audio digital recorders, 4 Listen Up Sound Enhancers, 3 EMF Readers, 3 pen laser lights, 1 temperature gauge, 4 flashlights, plastic analysis bags (for Bigfoot evidence), 3 dowsing rods, 3 pendulums, 1 set of binoculars, 1 telephoto lens, 9 cellular phones. B. who will be working with S. on a possible documentary was there to video tape this event. B. drove all the way up here from Santa Cruz, I enjoyed watching his professionalism as he handled his video camera and interviewed some of the main players of this scouting expedition.
First Stop/Makeshift Grave of Mason Riley: Our first stop was at a makeshift grave on the side of the road honoring Mason Riley, in which a truck he was a passenger in went over a cliff. H.and N. were very close to the family of this tragedy. We paid our tributes to Mason and his family.

Second Stop/Whiteman's Cemetery: A., a native American Indian and our guide through this cemetery briefed us on how her family has lived in this valley for 70 years. She explained how 7 tribes were driven from their lands from Ukiah and the Sacramento Valley to Covelo. She discussed Bloody Run Trail and how Indians were forced into boarding schools. She tells us how she lost many of her family members due to the conflict with the white settlers of this region. She explains because of all the tragedy, there is a lot of residual haunting activity here. Then there is Hatchet Mountain. N. says: "Hatchet Mountain has no actual hatchet buried up there, Its part of a Native burial ground, and the way that the snow never holds over it, its in the shape of a hatchet that occupies the entire front side of the mountain! So when it snows it outlines the grounds to expose the enormous hatchet." Angie tells us she has Wylaiki and Nomalaki blood in her. Her story is very sad and we listened to the many tragic tales of this land and its inhabitants. B. captures her briefing on video.

Third Stop/Pine Grove Indian Cemetery: Many of A.'s family members are buried here. She talks of the Nomalaki Indians and she discusses some of the paranormal activity of this land. She says that a black goblin has been seen, that has claws and a tail. She says that this goblin looks almost like a gargoyle with broken wings. A dead goblin was once found by the Indians and its disappearance after being found is a mystery, it was rumored that the Indians of this land burned it. What is interesting Whitley Streiber in his book 'Communion' describes a goblin type of creature that works alongside the 'grays'. The goblin type of creature that Whitley describes is dark blue, with no wings. The goblin is short and has the face of a gargoyle, almost similar to what A. is describing. A. says that the goblin that has been seen here has glass-like skin as dark as coal and a big nose. A. said the one that was found dead was wrapped in a yellow shaw type thing. The one that she has seen entering homes has never been seen wearing any article of clothing. Another entity that is seen here is a shadow woman that has holes for her eyes, mouth and nose, she wears a white dress. At times people hear distant warpath drums beating and a woman crying.

Fourth Stop/North Fork Lounge: We all stop to eat, we are starved! I gobble down some spaghetti and listen to the stories of two guests at our table named S. and L.. Both ladies have some interesting stories. They talk about Irmulco - Redwood Creek - Flat Meadow where S. witnessed hundreds of different colored lights in the open fields. The lights danced in the field and it reminded her of fairies or leprechauns. She talks about a huge UFO that was seen in this area, the size of a football field and it was oval in shape. She says that there were lights on the top of it. She once has a whirling rainbow portal that opened up near her bedroom, she talks about the Bigfoot sightings in this area. L. talks about her little boy that had an invisible playmate named Georgie and the strange occurrences that would happen when Georgie was around. S. and L. hang out with us after dinner and watch us proceed to investigate other places in Covelo. N. had me laughing, she calls all men and women 'dude' and she has a cute saying, when she is ready to go to another location, she will say..."let's mob over to that house!" Mob means 'to go'. Before I knew it she has me saying mob this and mob that.

Fifth Stop/Bigfoot Sighting Location: This is where H. witnessed a Bigfoot, the report went to the B.F.R.O. and the case file was created for this sighting by H.. H. explains in detail about her encounter to the HPI team. I attempt to communicate with Bigfoot by pounding a branch against a tree three times. Bigfoot is known to communicate by hitting wood on wood. I would hit the tree three times and waited for a response. At one time, I heard one hit upon a tree. I attempted this communication again and looked for intelligent responses. If I hit the tree 3 times with a branch, the Bigfoot should respond with 3 hits to a tree. Then I would go down to two and wait for 2 responses and so on and so on. With only one hit to the tree, this form of communication was inconclusive. B. and I, did hear 3 pebbles falling into the creek. This could have been an animal knocking over rocks into the creek, there were no more sounds of pebbles, which continued to make this attempt with communicating with Bigfoot inconclusive. R. claimed that when I was hitting the trees, a tapping on the car was heard as she sat in the car. A.and I looked for any evidence of her car being touched and we could find no evidence of this.

Sixth Stop/Buckhorn Bar: Also known as 'knuckie buckie' because of the fights that would occur in this bar and also known as -uckhorn Bar, changing the first letter into another letter that gives the bar a new light into seediness and raunchiness. the owner, from Central Africa/South Africa, tells me that this bar was at one time the most dangerous bar in Mendocino County, he now has all kinds of security cameras placed around the bar. He let me survey the security cameras and this is what I found. Cam 1: Orb movement. Cam 2: No paranormal activity. Cam 4: Has orb movement, one orb made a 90 degree turn, which could indicate intelligence. Cam 7: 2 large non-moving orbs that stay stationary and they recently appeared and there is no explanation why they are there. As we were going to continue our investigation pass closing time, The owner told us we have to leave, because there were local police parked outside of his establishment. For a small town, there are many local police cars and tribal police around this area.

Seventh Stop/Rice Straw Home of M.R. This home is reputed to be haunted. I cannot give you the details for the confidentiality request of the occupant. I love this home, it's made of rice straw! Also, outside of this home are real Indian tee pees! I actually went inside one of the tee pees. Orb photographs were captured at this location. EVPs were not gathered due to audio interference, there was a birthday party going on at this home during our investigation. There were too many people around to gather EVP evidence. H. captures white mist on the roof, I had H. try and duplicate the shot, but she was unable to. We were later able to determine that the white mist was the cold breath of H. captured on film. This photograph was debunked by the team.

Eighth Stop/H.'s office, reputed to be haunted. She believes this is in part residual due to the history of the land but has also seen the full body apparition of a local who recently passed and used to work in the same building. Lights turn on and off on their own accord and this was witnessed by part of the HPI crew on Saturday night and more so Sunday. I sent M. and N. on a survellaince/reconnaissance mission to survey the open fields at night, because it is rumored that shadow people are seen in these fields. M. sees 2 large figured shadow people on the balcony and it frightened her so much, she was practically sitting on N.'s lap. N. glimpsed the shadow people from her peripheral vision. M. also saw small shadow people figures running across the field. Later, C. and I conducted surveillance on these open fields and we did not see any shadow people. I was glad, I didn't feel like jumping on C.'s lap, nor did he want to jump on my lap! The night before J. (H.'s daughter) was confronted by a shadow person between her home and that of a friend's house. The two friends live a block apart and decided to meet half way. When J. rounded the corner she saw the shadow of what she assumed to be her friend and said, "Hey!" The shadow then crouched to the ground with no response. J. thinking it was her girlfriend playing a joke laughed and said, "You know I see you, don't you? What the *ell are you doing?!" Before her very eyes, the shadow person disappeared and the real version of her friend appeared coming out of her driveway, not even close to the location of J.'s sighting of the shadow person. J. is frightened from this experience and tells her mother about it. B. reports to J. she felt like she was being followed and also that she felt she was walking forever and not getting any where. C., A. and I, attempt to signal UFOs using flashlights and pen laser lights used against the night skies. Unfortunately there was cloud cover and the signaling was terminated. C. and I, did notice that the pen laser light travels a great distance, because we could see the red dot move on the outside of the cloud. The rest of the investigation was for ghostly activity in H.'s office. After the investigation, H. briefs us that several years ago cattle mutilations were occurring in this valley. The cattle mutilations have now resided. Cattle mutilations are associated with black helicopters and UFOs. Finally after the investigation was finished, we enjoyed two horror movies. Dead Silence and the true story of the Bell Witch, called An American Haunting. We had a slumber party for the whole investigation group right in H.'s haunted photography office, this was a very enjoyable investigation in which some of the investigators had experiences that may be considered paranormal, while other investigators did not. All of the evidence is being gathered and analyzed and the results will be mentioned at: http://ghosts.meetup.com/231/

Before I close, during the slumber party at H.'s office, there was snore wars! I will not disclose the snorers, but two of the snorers were snoring in harmony, which made everyone in the room wake up and there was bellowing laughter by everyone! Ahhh...snore wars is a fun game! With all of that snoring, it must have scared off any ghosts from Holly's office!

Added Note: C. and I headed back to Sacramento, while some of the investigators continued to conduct their investigation into Sunday. This Sunday investigation report will be completed by paranormal investigator Donna Reynolds.
